Defying Gravity: New York Style

From the outside, this gritty place looks more like a prison yard than a skate park. Surrounded by a tall intimidating barricade, it’s hard to tell if the fence is there to keep the onlookers out or the skateboarders in.

Once inside the gate, I understood why they fenced it off. The gate had barely shut behind me when a skater blasted into me from the back. He somehow managed to keep going after hurling a few adjectives my way. I had been warned.

This is Manhattan’s famous 62nd Pier Park located on the west side of the island. It’s big and audacious; a skate park befitting the Big Apple.

The late afternoon light was perfect for shooting. The concrete, the fence, and the skaters had a well worn grittiness, perfect for capturing these guys doing their thing.
